Now that the iPad 2 is out, the big question is, should you buy one? This is especially tricky if you already have an iPad 1. Now that I’ve had mine for a few weeks, I’d like to offer up a few suggestions.
To me the iPad 2 is a game changer. It works really well for data input, social media, and media consumption in general. If you already own a computer, the iPad 2 is a great companion. With the addition of programs like Evernote, you can collect and share data between the two units. It really makes an ideal combination.
If you don’t currently own a computer, I would suggest buying a MacBook Air if you have the resources, or a basic netbook or low cost laptop if you are on a real budget. While the iPad is a great device, it doesn’t completely replace a PC.
If you own the first generation iPad, upgrading is a little trickier. If you have a spouse or kids, handing down the current iPad and buying a new one makes sense. If you don’t, services like Gazelle will take your existing iPad in trade. The prices they offer are pretty good.
As far as models go, the basic 16 gig, WiFi unit will work great for most people. You can choose white or black and get a smart cover that matches your personality. If you need to communicate on the road, getting a 3G model may be a good option. ATT offers a basic plan for 15 dollars per month that works well if you are just doing e-mail or social media.
If you’re a power user or have kids that want a lot of movies loaded, the higher capacity units and data plans may be worth the extra money.
Overall, I think you’ll really like an iPad 2. The form factor is great for meetings, the app store has thousands of programs available for almost any application, and the light weight and clever smart cover allows you to take the unit almost anywhere.
The only real problem you may experience is getting one. As I write this, Apple is currently sold out across the US.
