I just finished up an amazing audio book entitled “Success Built To Last,” by Jerry Porras, Stewart Emory, and Mark Thompson. This book really helped me see what true success really is. One of the things that came to me from listening was that successful people do things that they are passionate about. Passion has always been one of my tenets of success and I wanted to revisit this in my own life.
The book suggests making a list of your personal passions and the authors gave an interesting warning.
“Listen up—here’s some really bad news: It’s dangerous not to do what you love. The harsh truth is that if you don’t love what you’re doing, you’ll lose to someone who does!…This person will work harder and longer. They will outrun you.”
I put a list together of things that I’m passionate about. I realized that some take priority over others, but that all of them are important in my life. Some of the major ones are…
- My Wife, Daughter, Family, and Friends.
- My Christian Faith
- Learning New Things
- Creating New Things
- Writing & Blogging
- Public Speaking
- Motivating Others
- Teaching
- Racing
It is actually a great exercise to list these out on paper and see where you are actually spending your time. I am truly blessed to have the time to do the things I’m passionate about and spend quality time with family and friends. With this in mind I though I would lay out a vision for this blog over the next few weeks.
Recently I’ve learned that working in a focused manner for 50 minutes at a time really helps when blogging, writing, and working on creative projects. What can I do with 50 minutes a day to make this the best blog that I can? I put some thoughts down on paper, using 50 minutes a day as a guide, to see what might be possible.
Here are some ideas…
Something I’ve wanted to do for a long time is come up with a site about what’s new, neat, or exciting. Something on the line of Engadget but with a wider focus, covering areas such as technology, entertainment, automotive, and travel. I thought about developing another blog but that adds a lot more work and dilutes the focus.
What I think will work is one post a week about four different things that will have interest to readers of this blog. What can be accomplished in 50 minutes? How about 4 icons, each with a paragraph and links, in one post to this blog. Each week we will have another 4 items of varied interest.
It will be called…
Mondays will be a great day to start with this post. You drop by and find out what the buzz is for the week. Maybe it’s a new gadget or possibly a new album by a famous artist. Maybe a piece of software headlines or maybe travel to a great destination at an unbelievable price. Success for the day might only be a click away…
Tuesdays continue the excitement with our latest personal development articles on time management, goal setting, leadership, and business development. Articles such as our 50 Minutes to Success, Business SPARK, and 12 Habits selections will headline. Tuesday’s personal development focus will add some motivation to make it a successful week.
Wednesday we’ll move over to our sister blog, MBA on the Run, for an Audio Book Review or Weekly Podcast. We’ll cover one of the latest titles in the Personal MBA program and cover a great place to listen to it. Whether you are listening while walking, running, or driving you’re sure to find this podcast an uplifting experience.
Thursday’s focus will be productivity and organization back here at SBT. Most days will have a project that you can download, such as our Walleteer, Dieteer, or Productivity Game. This is our hands-on day, where you can fire up your printer and print out something you can use on your job or at home. We’ll include some fun items too. When you are more organized and productive you can do your job better and go home earlier (yea!)
Friday will end the week on a positive note when you open your e-mail and take five minutes to read our Success-Connect newsletter. This will have an overview of all of our weekly items to make sure you don’t miss anything and a preview of the following week. Newsletter readers will receive a preview of the following week’s buzz items as well as some cool downloads available only to subscribers.
So the big question is… can this be done on a weekly basis? Can each of these items be done in 50 minutes?? Can I take the weekends off to work on my book? One week, 5 hours, 50 minutes at a time.
I would like to test the idea over the next two weeks.
Starting this Friday, our first edition of our free Success-Connect newsletter will be published. It will preview some of the things to come, and have a useful download for the office or home. Make sure to sign up so you don’t miss out on the fun.
Next Monday will be the launch of “Buzz-Discovery,” with four really cool things you’ll want to know more about. Tuesday we’ll continue the fun with a new personal development article on what success really means. Wednesday I’ll share the microphone with my wife as we discuss Draw 50: The productivity game, in a lively podcast. She’ll tell you what she thinks of the whole game idea and what she would prefer to do (and it isn’t cooking!). Thursday will bring a fun day with a new portable game that you can print out and take with you anywhere. Got 5 minutes to kill… this is the game for you (especially if you have kids!).
Then it’s off to week two…
Come join in the fun!
