I just downloaded John Mayer’s new album, Born and Raised, from Amazon and have been blown away by the lyrics. One song really spoke to me. It’s called “The Age of Worry.” I’ve struggled with worry all my life, but especially when walking down a new path. The fear of what’s around the next corner has stopped me dead in my tracks so many times.
The song starts out with these words…
Close your eyes and clone yourself
Build your heart an army
To defend your innocence
While you do everything wrong
I have seen this fear so many times…
- When I gave my first speech
- When I wrote my first book
- When I wrote my first blog post
I knew I wouldn’t be perfect.
I knew there would be many mistakes.
I knew people would point out my shortcomings.
Yet somehow, something inside helped me make it through.
It was the words of friends, the power of my faith, and the joy that comes from overcoming worry, once and for all, that got me through. For all of you facing a fearful situation, take heed of this songs advice…
Be alive in the age of worry
Rage in the age of worry
Sing out in the age of worry
And sing Worry, why should I care?
The next time you face a worrisome situation, play this short little song. The lyrics will encourage you, the tune will endear you, and as it ends you can say…
Worry, get out of here!
